The Phantom Menace Disappoints

I like this point about humor in kids films: it doesn't have to be slapstick and silly to work.

Jar-Jar Binks. Do I need to say more? Yes? Okay, I will. Jar-Jar Binks would have been good if he had been funny. Now the justification that Lucas has used is that this is a kids film. But so was Star Wars, so is Toy Story, Shrek and Finding Nemo. But that doesn’t mean that the humour has to be of the slapstick silliness that Binks represents. He’s just not cool. Chewbacca? He’s cool. R2-D2? He’s cool. Even Yoda when we first meet him in Empire Strikes Back - irritating but cool. Jar-Jar Binks? Just not cool!...
