Manga gateways...

Great story on how this blogger got into manga. And, no, I don't understand Fat Albert either.

Growing up in Hawaii, anime was never particularly exotic to me. I used to watch Ikyu-San and Candy-Candy on the Japanese channel. I looked forward to those shows more than my Saturday morning fix because they were the only cartoons airing in prime time. In hindsight I realize I never understood those shows — they were subtitled, not dubbed, and stopped airing by the time I learned to read — but I still enjoyed watching those shows. (Then again, I never understood Fat Albert, either, having grown up in an entirely suburban neighborhood. I watched...
