Get WASTED Online!

cartoons wasted comic book cover
Some history on the Wasted comics.

Alamat Comics compiled the comic book, titled simply WASTED in 1998, and we had our launch at Cybercafe in Robinson’s Galleria in February 13, a date somehow strangely fitting. When no one came with knives and pitchforks to burn me at the stake, it was then I realized just how much, and in what way, it has affected other people.

Blackheart Gang Interview

cartoon ree treweek
From a Siouxwire interview of Ree Treweek, who is part of the Blackheart Gang.
When my brother and i were little and refused to get out of the bath our Xhosa nanny, Fabia, would pull out the bath plug and once the water began spinning she would tell us that the snake was appearing and if we didn't jump out we would be eaten by him. Terrified we would leap out of the bath. Not long after first meeting, Markus and I did a three page fantasy comic strip based on this experience. It was from this that the Household idea began to form. I then made up a book of a collection of drawings I had done over the last few months.

Torrent Of Comics

cartoon comics marvel
A look at downloading comics from the Internet.
Offering comics on the internet is becoming unavoidable, with many comics being scanned and copied, not always legally, then posted for download on torrent sites and news groups. Preview pages being offered on comics news sites is becoming the norm in promotional campaigns for books. However, the majors are only now coming around to offering entire books online. Marvel and DC Comics are currently finalizing their strategies for online comics, and Top Cow announced at the New York Comic Convention that they have entered into a partnership with entertainment portal IGN.com to distribute downloadable digital editions of their back catalogue.

A fun look at X-Men and choosing super powers.
Its a question that goes through most peoples minds when watching or hearing about anything to do with X-Men. This brillaint Marvel Comic that has been so excellently brought to life and displayed on our big screens, it starts the strangest of thoughts in my head, thoughts that have kept me awake on many occasions, thoughts that, I'm sure shouldn't enter and normal guys mind when trying to sleep: If I had a mutant power, what would it be? Would I be good? Would I be evil? Would I tell anyone about my powers?

American Soil: Political Satire With Zombies

cartoons world war 2 comic book
From an interview with the author of American Soil, inspiration from World War 2 comic books.

So I figured what better way to voice my concerns over what I saw happening in the United States, than to dig up some zombies of my own to express it. As a writer, I’ve always preferred to rely on humor to make a point, which is why “American Soil” is almost as much a satire about zombies as it is about politics. So, in that regard, I would say that horror-comedies like “Shaun of the Dead”, “Army of Darkness” and “Return of the Living Dead” along with propaganda cartoons and comic books from the Second World War, were the inspiration for the kind of narrative that I wanted to write.

This blogger reads Dust Puppy to stay in the know.
Amazingly, this is the only online comic strip that informs me of the latest tech hypes and events. It told me about the RIAA and it’s stupidity, SCO’s stupid filing lawsuits against various BSDs and Linux Distros and copyright infringements, Google’s new services like GMail, GDrive, et al, and about Net Neutrality being under fire, and a lot more that I can’t remember off the top of my head. The website’s slogan always holds true, though. It impaired my productivity ever since I started reading it.

Review: Superman 652

cartoons superman 652 cover
From four reviews, this on Superman:
Anyways, if you managed to get past my 52 “review”, you’ll kinda get a vibe as to what’s wrong here with this issue. So, after IC, for some reason, Superman lost his powers. No real explanation I guess was needed, other than it made for some dramatic moment to have DC’s supposed 3 stand-out characters take some time off from their crime-fighterings, and let the spotlight shine on some of the other heroes or something. So de-powered Superman did who knows what for a year, I guess we’ll find out in 52, but now he is getting his powers back. How, you may ask? Did S.T.A.R. Labs work some magic science goodness on him? Nope. Did he get exposed to some awesome new re-powering Kryptonite, like on Smallville? Nope. Did Mr. Mxyzptlk show up and give Supes his powers back? Nada. Wanna know how he got em back?

I’m really loving Paul Pope’s Batman Year 100. It’s the best 2 dimensional riff on the dark knight for a good long while and brings a little French Comix sensibility to the character. I'd never heard of the comics code until I read this.

I’ve always thought of Disney as children’s entertainment. And I’ve always assumed that comics were always the way they are today, ie one of two general memes: Kids animated stories, or superhero. Both are escapist. Turns out the history of comics tells a tale of another approach.

New Imagecomics.com!

cartoons imagecomics cover art
The new Imagecomics site is great.

Its about time is all I have to say. The old image comics site sucked, mostly because it didn't bother to tell you what was coming out when...the main reason I go to any comic book publisher's website. However the new site fixes that, plus it looks really cool. Jumoing into a neat kinda post modern thing. Big type, interesting layout. I approve....as if they care. Now if Marvel, darkhorse and DC would revamp their sites and make them more relevant I'd be a happy panda.

Comic Reading Experience

cartoon sunday paper comics
Cartoon Central thinks the Internet it vital to reading comics.

I think the “accessibility” question is more of a problem in principle than in practice; between Google, DCUGuide, Spoilt!, and Newsarama’s various recaps, not to mention the local know-it-alls at your local comic shop or message board of choice, there are enough resources to help you figure out what’s going on in any given comic. It’s just a matter of whether you consider web surfing to be an appropriate part of the comic-reading experience, and whether the comic makes you interested enough to do so.

Trying To Kill HeroesCon

cartoons heroes convention poster
Some behind-the-scenes gossip in the world of comic cons.

However, when Wizard manages to garner a fluff piece like this (bugmenot login: samcolt, password: 12345) out of the publicity it received by trying their level best to screw over HeroesCon, it’s pretty damned annoying. I especially like the part where the article says that WizardWorld shows are the only ones where the fans get to interact with pros.

Thoughts on Webcomics Nation

cartoon webcomics nation irrational fears comic
This might be something important:

So, the current topic of discussion right now is the premiere of Webcomics Nation (WCN). Bob Stevenson mentioned how all the other “pundits” have thrown in their sentiments on the thing, and I figured I may as well, too. Especially since I haven’t had a “Snarkworthy” webcomic installment come to my attention for a while now.

The Comic Outsiders

Click through for more on the new Comic Outsiders.

I think it’s going to be huge. I think the support behind this is huge, and I think that the support will be even larger come September 1 when this thing is up and running. With so many people wanting to be able to voice their opinions and help make a difference in this era, they’ve been looking for their place to do so. Message Boards and Blogs had become the norm, but with some message boards, comics is not the main discussion anymore. I’m a comics activist, at least I like to think so, and I want to do my part. I love this industry, and I love writing, so I think it only fits that something like this really burned inside of me when I started thinking about it.

Death Of Clark Kent

cartoons clark kent and superman
This sounds like fun reading to me!

I went to Barnes and Noble afterwards to pick up a couple “graphic novels.” I ended up picking up World Without a Superman, The Return of Superman, and The Death of Clark Kent. All those added onto the ones from Wednesday…and that makes a busy list of night reading. And with that…I shall start. Goodnight.

Global Frequency

cartoons global frequency
Nice post on the history (and future?) of Global Frequency.
On July 4, my local comic book store had a 20% off sale. I swung by to pick up a stack of trade paperbacks I’d been wanting for a while, including the first collection of Warren Ellis‘ Global Frequency. Wired carried a story about GF a couple weeks ago, which motivated the purchase. The story was about how Warner Bros. transformed the comic into a pilot for television, and subsequently abandoned it. The pilot suddenly found itself spreading online via BitTorrent. More on that in a moment. First, the story itself.

Comic Con 2005!

cartoons lovecraft comic
Another comic-con report.

I found a bunch of interesting new comics, too. I picked up Brodie’s Law, which I’m still in the process of reading, mainly because it looked interesting and the writer or artist (not sure which off the top of my head) seemed like a cool guy and was selling them for discount. I’m also anxiously awaiting the release of this Lovecraft comic. I’m a big Lovecraft fan, and I dig the mix of traditional and digital art they’re using. It’s the kind of stuff I want to see more of in comics. I’m also looking forward to a supposed special edition of Ascend (couldn’t find official site).

Review: Fantastic Four

cartoons fantastic four reed
A little primer on Marvel comics of the 1990s.

First of all, lemme preface this by saying that I owned lots of comic books and comic book collector cards back in elementary school, so I tried to learn lots of stuff about Marvel Comics’ heroes and villains… Spider-Man was my favorite (of course), and the X-Men were popular and cool…but the Fantastic Four had been around for a long time and weren’t quite as popular anymore… Sure, they were a staple of comic book heroes, but they just weren’t that interesting for a kid in the 1990s.

I find so many great stories of comics and childhood.

I remember going through a friend’s blog with links to online comics. That reminded me of how I grew up with my very own collection of champak, amar chitra katha, raj comics and those billu and chacha chaudhary comic strips on the Friday paper. A trip to the city with my parents meant a new magazine or the latest in the series of Nagraj from the news stand at the bus stop.

Pefect New York Day

cartoons midtown comics new york
Ben's Kosher, Rockefeller Center and Midtown Comics ... how much better does it get?

Yesterday was spent cruising NYC with Grammatikos, which provided high entertainment. We grabbed lunch at Ben’s Kosher in Manhattan, which was freaking awesome (I haven’t had a salami burger or matzo ball soup in far too long), then wandered the City. After making sure to take Wolverine’s picture with the tree in Rockafeller Center (said picture will be posted soon, hopefully), I went and spent too damn much in various stores, including Midtown Comics. All in all, a productive day.

Here's a whole area of illustration I know nothing about.

I am almost inclined to believe this is some kind of prank, especially since the poster, someone named “Gord” appears to have completely bought the Japanese right-wing nationalist narrative of the colonial period in Korea. Perhaps his love for comics eventually led him to spend a little too much time with the illustrated books by Japanese fascist writer Kobayashi Yoshinori.

Drawing Comics

cartoons comics by blogger
Go for it!

And finally, the monkey-wrench in the mix: I really like drawing comics. I don’t know if I am any good at it yet, but I am really enjoying experimenting. I am so used to drawing with pencils that it feels like a palatable baby-step to use ink instead of graphite for a while. Using ink has made me much more confident about my lines, and the richness of the black ink is really exciting, especially compared to the gray of the pencil marks. Perhaps the book I make this year (if it is only one) will be a comic book. Who knows?

Comics Matter

cartoons mad magazine
Nice post on the importance of comics.
So today I was all thinking and I thought about how long I’ve been reading comics, in some shape or form. Archie, Superman when I was a little kid playing piano and hockey moving on to Mad Magazine when I was just starting to get political satire, Europeen cartoons, Simpsons comics, that kinda stuff. Anyway I just realised how much comics mattered when I was all small, and noticed that in two of my comics people complain about there being no kids reading comics anymore.

Batman Begins

cartoons batman begins poster
I liked the earlier Batman moview better, too.

One of the things about the Batman comics is that the character isn’t Superman. He’s not the clean ideal of a superhero that Superman is. He’s motivated by demons and he’s a dark character in an even darker world. It’s why I loved Tim Burton’s direction in the first two movies. He remained true to that character and to that world. Joel Schumacher, for all of his other accomplishments, well… he’s not exactly right for Batman. The third and fourth movies were cheesy and flashy, too much like the goofy TV shows that really had nothing to do with the comics. And I liked the TV shows. Christopher Nolan is a much better choice. If you’ve seen Memento, you know why. If you haven’t seen Memento, go see it.

Deeee.licio.us!

Good tip on tracking your comics on the web:

What's del.icio.us? It's a social bookmarks manager. It lets you post sites to a personal bookmarks collection that you can access anywhere! You can assign tags to all the sites you post, which lets you organise your bookmarks around these tags. For example, right now, I've got 320 bookmarks with the tag "games," and 204 with the tag "comics." You can assign as many tags as you want to a bookmark. So if you find a blog about comics and games, you can assign both tags to that bookmark.

Comic Book Great Frank Miller

cartoons ronin comic frank miller
Nice write-up on comic book artist Frank Miller:

As Scott McCloud explains in Understanding Comics, his definitive work on the art of comic book storytelling, comics belong to a medium all their own. They are not merely pictures with word captions, or written stories with illustrations. Comics are a blending of words and pictures to tell a story. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Few artists demonstrate this interplay better than Frank Miller.

Web Comics Business

cartoons web comics
Good blog debate going on about web comics here:

I’m leary. Maybe for the next generation. Cautious. I don’t want any kids getting bright ideas that there’s this “industry” – just about EVERY business model for comics online is in a complete FUNK or failure right now. Some of the biggest online hubs, cartoonists are LUCKY to get even 100 bucks a quarter!! And those are some of the highest paying things! So the real success still lies in probably a handful of independents at this time, and I wouldnt call that an industry or career path.

Nice run down on some great comics here:

Some recent superhero comics, quickly (though I always say that) recapped:

Marvel Knights Spider-Man, by Hudlin, Tan and Sibal. This issue reveals last issue as Reginald Hudlin’s Spider-Man shakeout cruise - it had its entertaining bits but the ending was so off in tone from the rest of the book as to ruin the whole thing. Also, Billy Tan’s art on the classroom scenes only worked if Peter Parker taught science to midgets. Parker is a high school teacher, but the kids only came up to his waist. This issue is far more surehanded. I’m glad my enjoyment of Hudlin’s Black Panther #4 convinced me to give...

If Joe's your type ...

The man, Joe Bulmer, is the main character in Th1rt3en - a comic reprinted by DC but originally on 2000 AD comics. He's an incredibly scruffy, sneering punk you want to knee in the groin, grab 'hold of his hair and push your tongue in his mouth. But due to the fact that he's straight, he'd probably blow me away with his telekinetic powers, which he uses to great effect in the book. It doesn't keep me from adding him to our cavalcade of crushes over here on this site and in my cold, black heart.

Comics in Education

Click through for more of the speech on comics in education:

What’s so great about comics? It’s simple. Comics combine images and text on a page but still make the reader conjure up their imagination. Comics give the reader a template as to what the world and the characters of a work of literature should look like. But I’m not here to talk about how great comics are. I want to offer an educational initiative that has been thought about ever since the 40’s: to use comics for educational purposes.

White Ninja Comics

Click through for more White Ninja comics.

Its this extremely strange comic i found while trolling the backwoods of the internet, and for some reason i like it. I’m not alone, apparently the comic has a huge following, and the guy thinks Bill Watterson is gods gift to comics, which i agree with and makes me think his comic is at least worth reading every one.

Artist Featured at Anime Boston

cartoons comics dominic deagen oracle for hire
Michael “Mookie” Terraciano, the creator of the popular manga Web comic “Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire", had some words of comic wisdom at the Anime Boston convention:

“The games, the comics, the outfits…This stuff is fun,” says Yuan Chen of Massapequa, N.Y., who traveled to the convention with three of his friends.

“That’s why people read comics. We can do things in comics that we couldn’t do in real life,” Terraciano said.

The Price of Free Comics

cartoons comics drawn at comic day
Nice post about taking the boys to Free Comic Day at Packrat Comics in Hilliard, Ohio.

What could be better than free comics? Why, free beer of course, but that is still a few weeks away and, in all honesty, holds far less appeal than it used to. Free comics are way more useful these days.

All in all it was a good time. We got to see a magician. The boys had some exposure to something art-related. And there were free comics.

PhDComics

cartoons piled deeper and higher cover
Piled Higher and Deeper is a funny comic strip about the life of grad students. Really, it's funny.

Then I got home and my copy of PhDComics Chapter 2 book had arrived! It features the secret ending of Mike Slakenerny's defense and all the other great comics. Jorge does such a good job of capturing the essence of PhD candidate life - with all the stress and, well, other stuff that's involved.

True Blog Comics!

cartoons true blog comics
Love this concept!

Three weeks ago, when I was writing a post about a spat between two bloggers, I made a funny graphic to go with my words. It was a send-up of the old "true crime" comic book genre, so I named it "True Blog Comics." Since then, I turned it into a running gag, and made three more "True Blog Comics" lampoon covers. I really enjoy them, and -- admit it -- so do you. So I'm adding a new True Blog Comics category to my blog, so they'll all be in one place.

Better Paper, Higher Price

cartoons dc comics
DC Comics has a small announcement: the price is going up!

There is an interesting titbit buried at the bottom of the latest DC Newsletter. From JLA #115 (the start of the IC followup) the cover price will rise from $2.25 to $2.50. I’m sure you’ll hear moaning and whaling on the message boards about the price of comics. But one thing to remember is that DC recently changed the quality of the JLA paperstock. They’ve moved over from a newspaper style matt paper to a glossy paper. It doesn’t sound much, but the gloss paper gives far better colour reproduction. Quite frankly that alone...

Review: Sin City

cartoons sin city poster
The L.A. Times had a pretty negative review of Sin City, but lots of bloggers are posting positive reviews:

Friday night, Heather, Erika and I tried to go see Sin City, but the showing we wanted to see was sold out, so we bought tickets for the same showing the next night, instead. What a great movie. I’d never read the graphic novels that it was based off, and I was mostly interested in seeing it due to how it was filmed. So many movies based off comics fail, I think, because while they may import the characters and stories from comics, they don’t get the style that comics are done with. Each frame of a comic book has been painstakingly...

Joe Mad's pencil

cartoons joe mad drawing
This blogger picks up info on Joe Mad and his early start in cartooning.

Joemad aka Joe Madureira - At the early age of sixteen, Joe Madureira began his dream of pursuing a career in comics. A student at the High School of Arts and Design in Manhattan, Madureira received an internship job working at Marvel Comics part-time. During his internship, he met associate editor Mark Powers, who introduced him to editor Terry Kavangah. Kavangah was impressed enough with Madureira to assign him an eight-page ‘Northstar’ story, which ran in Marvel Comics Presents #92. The first Madureira story to see print was the second story he drew, a ‘Mojo’ tale in #89.

Kudos to Comics

cartoons comics
From a comic fan to a comic fans:

Ok!! So when I write about books, I’d like to start from the very beginning.. the beginning when I actually started to read ‘em. And ofcourse since I did that at a very young age, what better way to start than with pictures!!! And so it has remained my favorite since then. Comics are my most favorite form of entertainment. Some say its gotto do with my child-like nature.. but I’d like to think otherwise. These comics are created by adults themselves!

Review: Sin City Movie

cartoons sin city poster
At least one thumb is up for Sin City:

I have to say they did a damn good job at making a movie out of the comic books. A little too much Tarantino in the directing with the jacked-up timeline but a fine job nonetheless. A good combination of a couple of the comics along with some really sick and twisted humor! We love ya Frank!

New Comics

Interesting new comics:

Got a little bit more work to take care of, faithful readers, before I can bring my attention back to this here snarkblog. However, I have been as always poking around and finding many new comics and adding them to The Slate (to be updated also), so the source of material is ever growing.

In the meantime, I recommend Yukihime’s Penny Arcade Remix Project for my fellow PA fans. It’s high-larious.

How I Discovered Comics

cartoons comic book rack
I thought this was pretty good.

In April of 1977 (7th grade, and a year into reading Burroughs) I notice the comic book rack at the grocery store. Before this moment, I have no memory of encountering comics except for the Sunday paper and in Big Boy resturaunts. For all the reading I’d done in my young life, comics simply hadn’t been on my radar.

When did you discover comics?

Geek or Not

Which floor is that on again:

My friend Ray and I both fall into some undefined category between "geeks" and regular guys. By that I mean that we have too much of an interest in genre films, science fiction, comics, superheros etc. to be thought of as normal folk, yet we're not obese or unhygienic enough to be thought of as hard-core geeks. With this in-between status comes an ability to "pass" in either geek or normal society.

Superhuman Competition

comic superhero
New theories of superheroes developed here:

Dave Intermittent has an interesting response to Suspension of Disbelief about “superhero law.”

Sort of related: I got a notion on a related topic somewhere in the most recent discussion of gay marriage, marginal effects, communitarianism and social conservativism. The common feature of traditional superhero comics is that you have vigilantes and authorized deputies over here, and superpowered criminals over here. It was decades of real time before the Wally West Flash took a job as a courier or She-Hulk’s law firm hired a shapeshifting process server.

That seems silly, right? Why use your super strength to rob banks when you can use your super strength to get rich in a thousand ways?

Sin City

comics sin city movie poster
I'm hearing lots of good things about Sin City. Here's another:

Cinematically, this film is as close to Miller's graphic novels (from which it is derived) as it could be without having the actual pages of the book come to life in your hands. Framing, lighting and shadows all look as if they were lifted right out of the panels of Miller's art. The similarity is not unexpected, at least in this case, because Miller shares director status with Robert Rodriguez, which helps him to bring his distinctive feel to the film. Every film gains it's "look", or what is shown on the screen, from storyboards which are basically comic book-like pages used to show scene progression. Miller is a master of what the late Will Eisner called "sequential art". Like Eisner, Miller can illustrate pages and pages of story with no dialogue or captions, because he is just that good at telling the story through his art.

Other movies have tried to translate the "look" or the "feel" of comics; from Warren Beatty's Dick Tracy with it's bright gaudy colors to Ang Lee's Hulk with comic book styled panels used in transition scenes. But I personally cannot recall another movie that has so faithfully rendered what was on the page to the screen.

Review: Young Avengers #1

comics the young avengers
A great new comic from Marvel!

Allen Heinberg, one of The O.C.’s main writers, was basically responsible for Seth’s Comicgeek-ness. For his efforts to spread the gospel (and apparent sexual potency) of the graphic storytelling genre, Marvel Comics offered Heinberg a gig writing a new book spinning out of the events of their controversial “Avengers Disassembled” semi-crossover. The results? Young Avengers #1, with Heinberg collaborating (and co-creating) with Jim Cheung, now a grizzled vet in his late 20’s. Cheung’s layouts...
